The deep dive:
The Purrified Air litter box air filter employs five-stage air filtration, using a combination cutting-edge and tried-and-true technologies.
Stage one: a filter pad blocks dust from kicked-up litter from clogging later media stages and from escaping the litter box. Stage two: The filter pad is treated with a natural chemical called catechin. It is derived from green tea and is effective against microorganisms.
Fun fact: You don't get green tea in a sushi restaurant just because it tastes good. Catechin, is also known to kill microorganisms like bacteria which can be on raw seafood, preventing illness.
Catechin is also effective in removing odor-causing and illness-causing microorganisms in the air. When weaponized by air filtration systems, catechin becomes an important phase of the Purrified Air Five Phase filtration system. Here is what the Mitsubishi company says about the catechin used in its air conditioner pre-filters:
"Catechin filters get their name from a naturally occurring bioflavonoid found in green tea that has been used in traditional medicine since ancient times. After moving the litter box to a more obscure location at the back of the house, I noticed the house had an unpleasant order upon entry. Then realized the new location was right under one of the ac intake vents. Added this quiet workhorse directly over the litter box and it completely eliminated pungent, as well as more subtle litter box odors. I actually set up my sewing equipment adjacent to this space and detect no odor from the nearby litter box. Worth the money! But note, the wall brace is a separate purchase, so consider that when placing your order.

I have a big chonk of a void, and we live in a small, “open concept” house. That means any smell from his litter box can easily waft up from the basement into the kitchen and living room, which absolutely nobody is into. He already had a Scoop-Free box (which is great) but that smell is just stubborn… I got the cover for his Scoop-Free, cut a hole in the top, and plopped this fan on top to suck out and clean all that litter box air. This thing works GREAT. The rumours are true- you may forget to change the litter box because there is no smell to remind you. It’s pricey, as are the replacement filters, but they really do the job (and it’s still less than a litter robot).
I originally rated this 2 stars, but then Purrified Air responded to my comment making inaccurate assumptions about my litter box situation. Apparently instead of the $400 I spent on two systems I should have spent $1,000 on four or five, which seems a little unreasonable. So I guess if you have 1 or maybe 2 cats this would work fine. If you have multiple cats like we do, consider breaking the bank if you so want.
We made no assumptions. You said the filter did not work for 'the (singular use) litter box' for your five cats. The kind of customer service at which we excel is helping cat owners solve odor problems in multi cat households. Here's how that normally works to great success: They would shoot me an email along the lines of, 'Here's my situation. I have three cats and four open litter trays. Do I need four filters?' My response would be 'If you set it up right, two should do. You could line all four next to each other along a wall and place the two filters about 18' above, and one each a foot or two off center. If you think that only gets you two-thirds of the way there, try one more. If that is what you want you to do I will extend the three-pack quantity discount. If it does not work to your satisfaction you can always return it all for a full refund.” By the way, two filters cost $278.98, and four cost $495.97.
