The deep dive:
The Purrified Air litter box air filter employs five-stage air filtration, using a combination cutting-edge and tried-and-true technologies.
Stage one: a filter pad blocks dust from kicked-up litter from clogging later media stages and from escaping the litter box. Stage two: The filter pad is treated with a natural chemical called catechin. It is derived from green tea and is effective against microorganisms.
Fun fact: You don't get green tea in a sushi restaurant just because it tastes good. Catechin, is also known to kill microorganisms like bacteria which can be on raw seafood, preventing illness.
Catechin is also effective in removing odor-causing and illness-causing microorganisms in the air. When weaponized by air filtration systems, catechin becomes an important phase of the Purrified Air Five Phase filtration system. Here is what the Mitsubishi company says about the catechin used in its air conditioner pre-filters:
"Catechin filters get their name from a naturally occurring bioflavonoid found in green tea that has been used in traditional medicine since ancient times. Catechin — which has antiviral and antibacterial properties — is infused into every molecule of these filters, which enables them to strip the passing air of odor-causing pollutants such as tobacco smoke and pet smells. An equally important benefit is that they trap and deactivate microscopic bacteria and viruses, which can diminish or prevent the spread of some diseases."
Stages three-five: A proprietary blend of 2.2 pounds (one Kilogram) -- 6 to 90 times more filter media than our three major competitors use* -- consisting of (Stage three) activated carbon, (Stage four) zeolite and (Stage five) negative ion ceramic balls. Activated carbon, in the right quantity and with the right air flow through it removes many VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) such as those found in cat waste. Additionally, zeolite is particularly effective against the odor-causing ammonia in cat urine. Negative Ionic ceramic balls are used because of their effectiveness in killing odor-causing bacteria.
Odor from cat waste is primarily from one chemical in urine — ammonia — and three in feces: methyl mercaptan, skatole, and hydrogen sulfide. Different filter media is required to remove them from household air. Zeolite is very good at removing ammonia odor. Huge quantities are used in livestock farming buildings to reduce ammonia odor there. Activated carbon is a poor ammonia remover. However, it excels at removing feces odor. While both urine and feces contribute to litter box odor, the ammonia in urine is the bigger contributor.

This is fantastic. I have the litter box in the guest bathroom. I was worried it would just smell like litter any time someone goes in. But this device is small but mighty. There is no unpleasant odor in the bath. I have been a cat pet owner for 40 years. I wish I would have had this much sooner.

This air filter was gifted to my household after a long struggle with litter smell. We have a cat with kidney disease, so her business is much more "potent" than your average cat and it was taking over the house. We were scooping the box twice a day, doing a full change weekly, keeping windows open, trying various deodorizers and home air fresheners. My poor partner's nose is more sensitive than mine, so even when I couldn't smell anything he would still be bothered by it. Nothing worked until Purrified Air, the smell is gone and only faint when you approach the litter box. We'll even forget to scoop for a couple days every once in a while, that's how effective it is compared to before. The cats adjusted to the sound of the fan quickly, it's not terribly loud at all. Though it was gifted, I would've bought it myself even on a tighter budget because it's worth every penny. The filters are long lasting, we only need a couple in a year, so the refill price also feels very worth it. I have zero complaints, this has been a miracle product and vastly improved our quality of life!
